Rolls Royce Crossley works was located on Pottery Lane Manchester and was originally founded by the Crossley Brothers in 1851. Prior to closure by Rolls Royce the site produced Marine Engines. The works involved the Demolition of all structures including slabs, foundations, concrete, macadam hard standings, marine engine test beds, cooling towers, Degassing and cleaning of underground storage tanks prior to exhuming the tanks. Also included was the removal of 25000m2 of Asbestos cement roofing sheet in accordance with The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
The layout of the site had changed significantly over many years and ground investigations carried out during the demolition process showed historic foundations were present throughout the site. The presence of sub surface obstructions and the potential implications with regard to the planned redevelopment meant that a turnover excavation to 34,000m2 removing all historic obstructions was required to an average depth of 1.7metres prior to backfilling and compaction. High reach excavators working within an exclusion zone in accordance with BS6187-2011 Code of Practice for Full and Partial Demolition carried out the majority of the demolition. This method of demolition removes the need for operatives to work in high risk areas.
The works also involved a controlled demolition of a redundant primary sub-station adjacent to a live Network rail track. Testing of redundant electrical transformers identified PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls) within the transformer coolant oil which is a highly toxic material. The coolant oil was removed under controlled conditions by specialist contractors. Liaison with Network Rail was carried out to agree timings and methodology for the demolition. The works were carried out under a line closure Supervised by Network Rail. The arisings from the demolition works were crushed to produce a 6f2 graded aggregate for use in the redevelopment. The works were completed within budget and programme.
